Helping a Loved One

Helping a loved one or family member get treatment for schizophrenia

If you are worried that someone you love has schizophrenia, do not hesitate to get help. Early diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia can prevent many unnecessary complications and improve the chance of lasting stabilization. In most cases, schizophrenia will come on slowly with subtle warning signs and a gradual decline in functioning before the onset of severe episodes. Some common early warning signs of schizophrenia include:

  • Social withdrawal
  • Hostility or suspiciousness
  • Flat, expressionless gaze
  • Inappropriate laughter
  • Depression
  • Oversleeping or insomnia
  • Strange use of words or ways of thinking
  • Odd or irrational statements

Any of these warning signs are a cause for concern and should be looked at by a mental health professional. If your loved one does indeed have schizophrenia, your love and support are going to play a critical role in treatment and recovery. You can make a huge difference by helping your loved one find the right treatment, cope with his or her symptoms, and just be there for him or her during this difficult time. In order to successfully help your loved one, it is important for you to do the following:

  • Accept the illness and the difficulties it elicits
  • Be realistic in what you expect from your loved one
  • Do your best to help your family member enjoy life
  • Pay attention to your own needs
  • Remain hopeful

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for schizophrenia at StoneCrest Center in Detroit, MI

If an individual with schizophrenia does not get the proper treatment that he or she needs, the result can be severe emotional, behavioral, and health problems. These problems can affect all aspects of a person’s life, including an inability to work or go to school and the development of financial problems, which could lead to poverty and homelessness. Those with schizophrenia are at an increased risk for abusing drugs or alcohol, developing anxiety or depression, and beginning to engage in self-harming behaviors. If continued to be left untreated, things will only get worse and cause more destruction in an individual’s life.

Seeking help from an inpatient treatment program can be one of the best ways for people with schizophrenia to receive the intensive treatment they need to jump-start their recovery process. By entering into this type of program, individuals are able to step away from the chaos that this illness has inflicted on their lives and focus solely on becoming well again. In this setting, appropriate medications can be administered while the patient is under the constant supervision of medical and mental health professionals who can make any changes that may be necessary. In addition to medication, the implementation of various therapeutic techniques, such as individual, group, and family therapy, can help individuals learn to cope with daily stressors, improve social interactions, and identify early warning signs of relapse. Inpatient treatment programs offer those with schizophrenia a chance at a better life.

Types of Treatment

Types of schizophrenia treatment offered at StoneCrest Center

At StoneCrest, we use a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, which is implemented by a fully qualified staff who work to enhance person-centered planning for every patient who entrusts us with his or her care. Each patient’s case manager will serve as his or her advocate and help guide him or her through the treatment process while also establishing a therapeutic relationship as they work with the patient towards reaching identified treatment goals. Our treatment programs are designed to meet the needs of the patient as a whole to ensure all treatment needs are being addressed and coordinated while in the hospital. Some treatment techniques we use in our programs may include:

Medication management: Medication is a large part of schizophrenia treatment and most patients will take some form of antipsychotic. While medication is not a cure for schizophrenia, it works to reduce the psychotic symptoms of this disorder. While at StoneCrest, all patients are seen by a doctor on a regular basis and are seen by a psychiatrist on a daily basis.

Group therapy: Group therapy is a large part of the treatment process at StoneCrest, and multiple groups are held on a regular basis. Some of the common group topics include social skills, support systems, anger management, and educational meetings.

Family therapy: Family involvement is extremely important to the well-being of the patient, which is why we encourage family involvement throughout the treatment process. We can educate the patient’s family to help them understand what their loved one is experiencing and how to cope with certain emotional difficulties in the future.

Additional methods that may be used depending upon the unique needs of each patient include:

  • Individual therapy
  • Expressive arts
  • Therapeutic recreation
  • Sensory room

what past clients say

My husband and I felt like we didn't know who our son was anymore because of how he was acting out at home and in school. After completing inpatient treatment at StoneCrest, he's stable, respectful, and the happy boy we knew him to be. Thank you StoneCrest!
